goodbye Lucio
On Friday morning I woke up to the news that singer-songwriter and musician Lucio Dalla had died. I have been trying to find the words to explain how important he was to me and millions of other Italians, but I can't, so I have looked on YouTube for a video to share and decided upon one (uploaded by elbex) from the historical Banana Republic Tour with Francesco De Gregori (remember my Dinner Table book? De Gregori is one of the "potential guests"). The title of the song, Cosa sarà, means What is it? (Lucio Dalla is the one who sings first and the video shows him playing the saxophone, one of his instruments.)

Lucio Dalla was born on March 4, 1943 and everybody knew it because it was the title of his first hit. His career spanned four and a half decades and he wrote a large number of songs that are part of us. Tomorrow, March 4, there will be the funeral in his home town of Bologna.
