curried sweet chili peppers

Last Saturday, I brought back from the farmers' market the three beauties you see in the photo. The farmers who grew them specializes in peppers and has a great selection. He told me these were sweet with just a hint of spice, basically perfect for my intended purpose. I had made this simple recipe once with the peppers I had received in my CSA box and liked it a lot (read: I ate the whole pan), so I was looking forward to trying it again.
There is a traditional Italian dish called peperonata, whose ingredients are bell peppers, onion (cipolla) and tomatoes (pomodori). The dish I made is different in that I added curry as spice, inspired by this recent post by Ale on Tin Can Recipes. I topped the dish with formaggio (cheese), like I did recently with mushrooms, except this time I used one of my own production.
This is really not a recipe that requires exact measurements. I will give you what I used to make the dish in the photo below, but you should feel free to increase or decrease the quantities to answer your needs and your taste.
Print-friendly version of briciole's recipe for peperoni al curry
Ingredients:
- olive oil
- 10 oz. sweet onion, like walla walla
- a large garlic clove (or 2 small ones), minced
- 3 sweet chili peppers (about 13 oz.)
- 1/2 teaspoon curry powder diluted in 2 tablespoons of warm water
- sea salt, to taste
- thin slices of my homemade robiola
Warm up some olive oil in a large pan. Slice the onion lengthwise into thin sections no wider than 1/4 inch and separate the layers so you have short ribbons. Add to the pan together with the garlic, stir to coat and let cook on medium low heat while you prepare the peppers, stirring every now and then.
Cut the peppers lengthwise. Carve out and discard the stem portion, and the seeds and ribbing inside. Cut each half in half crosswise and finally slice each piece into short ribbons no wider than 1/4 inch. Add to the pan, stir and then add the diluted curry. Stir well, cover and cook on gentle heat until the peppers are of the desired tenderness. Every few minutes, uncover and stir.
When the peppers are ready, adjust the salt and stir, then remove the pan from the heat. Distribute the cheese over the mushrooms, cover the pan again and let the cheese soften for a few minutes, while you let your mouth water. Serve and eat right away.
I can't wait to get more of those beautiful peppers at the market to make this dish again. It is very satisfying in both flavor and texture, and it is also quite easy and quick to prepare, so I recommend you give it a try.

chili pepper, onion, curry, cheese
Sabato scorso al mercato ho comprato le tre bellezze che vedete qui sopra da un signore che è specializzato in peperoni e ne ha perciò una ricca selezione. Alla mia domanda sul tipo di peperone che aveva attirato la mia attenzione ha risposto che è dolce con giusto un tocco di piccante, proprio quello di cui avevo bisogno per il piatto che avevo in mente. Avevo preparato questa ricetta semplice con i peperoni che avevo trovato nella mia cassettina (l'ultima della stagione, sigh!) e mi era piaciuto molto (leggi: ho mangiato l'intero contenuto della padella), per cui non vedevo l'ora di prepararla di nuovo.
Quello che ho fatto è diverso dalla peperonata: non ho usato pomodori e, ispirata da questo questo post di Ale su Tin Can Recipes, ho usato del curry come spezia. Poi, come ho fatto di recente con i prataioli, ho completato il piatto con del formaggio, stavolta uno di mia produzione.
Questa non è una ricetta che richiede misure precise. Qui sotto riporto le quantità che ho usato nel preparare il piatto della foto, ma aumentate o diminuite pure tali quantità in modo da soddisfare i vostri bisogni e il vostro gusto.
Ingredienti:
- olio d'oliva
- 280 g cipolla dolce (qui si trova la walla walla)
- aglio tritato, uno spicchio se grosso o due piccoli
- 3 peperoni di varietà dolce (370 g)
- mezzo cucchiaino (2,5 ml) di polvere di curry diluito in 2 cucchiai (30 ml) di acqua calda
- sale, q.b.
- fettine fine della mia robiola fatta in casa
Tagliare la cipolla per lungo a spicchi di mezzo centimetro e separare gli strati. Scaldare dell'olio di oliva in una padella e aggiungere cipolla e aglio. Mescolare bene e far cuocere a fuoco medio-basso mentre tagliate i peperoni, mescolando di tanto in tanto.
Tagliare i peperoni a metà per lungo. Rimuovere il picciolo, e semi e filamenti interni. Tagliare ciascuna metà a metà per largo e poi tagliare ogni pezzo a nastrini larghi mezzo centimetro. Aggiungere alla padella e mescolare, poi aggiungere il curry diluito. Mescolare bene, coprire e cuocere a fuoco dolce fino a quando i peperoni sono della consistenza desiderata. Mescolare di tanto in tanto durante la cottura.
Quando i peperoni sono pronti, salare e mescolare, poi togliere la padella dal fuoco. Distribuire il formaggio sulla superficie, coprire la padella e lasciare che il formaggio si ammorbidisca. Servire dopo qualche minuto e gustare immediatamente.
Non vedo l'ora di comprare degli altri peperoni al mercato per rifare questo piatto che è davvero ottimo nonché facile e veloce da preparare.
